Thanks to the ease of access from Crunchyroll I’ve been watching a lot more anime than normal this season. Also I have neglected my blog lately and have a lot of feedback to share about this season. So I decided to write a quick run down of everything I’ve been watching this season along with a ranking too.
To be honest though despite all I’m watching here I can only describe this season as uninspired and average at best. In fact I’d say almost everything on this list is average (on the positive side almost nothing was horrible either). I could even name an older anime that is very similar to almost anything on this list. It’s like no one wants to take a chance anymore and just goes with what they know will likely not fail. While I feel this issue is very similar to a lot of issues I’ve discussed before on this blog and most notably with Macross F I’ll have to leave the issues in modern anime for another day. For now on with the fall season impressions.
20. Walkure Romanze
I suppose if you like harems and jousting this is the one for you. All I can say that was good about it was the character designs are cute and that horse was the best character in episode one by far. It was also very easy to mock too.
verdict: decided this was a drop after 10 minutes
It appears this is basically an anime that saw Maou-sama a few seasons ago and said me too! However I didn’t find the humor all that appealing and adding the word magic in front of every modern-day invention got really old fast. Was pretty predictable in the first episode too so I have no desire to continue on with it.
verdict: dropped after episode 1
18. Strike the Blood
I think I’ve seen a show like this every single season. It’s probably not as bad as I ranked it but then again I already have forgotten about almost everything in it it left that little impression on me. I suppose if you like the modern-day shounen supernatural vampire fantasy drama that seems very similar in setup to Vampire in the Bund go for it.
verdict: dropped after episode 1
Phi Brain is an anime I dropped episode 1 of the first season and then picked back up when they added on Megumi Nakajima. I’ve regretted this every second she is not on-screen since. Third season continues to be the same, crazy puzzles and a plot that is uninspired around it. Can only recommend for those who are either a puzzle manic or like me a sucker for whatever anime your favorite seiyuu is in.
verdict: oh the pain
Well this anime is pretty popular from what I see however I can not share the enthusiasm honestly. Nothing really separates it from any other harem show out there other than there is mecha like action in there somewhere. Through three episodes I’ve yet to see much of a plot it’s just every girl chasing after the main character. But I suppose that is the actual point anyways. So since the girls are cute I guess the show isn’t bad then? lol
verdict: Cecila is cute
15. Kyousou Giga
I have no idea what I just saw. Seriously what happen. Episode two appears to be not much better from what I hear. Sorry you are on your own if you care to find out whether it’s any good cause I can’t help you there. At least it gets points for being original…I think…
It’s Kamichu’s estranged younger brother! Seriously though this show puts off major Kamichu vibes. That is not a bad thing however it wasn’t all that interesting in episode one so I did not continue on after that episode. Would like to give it more time but I would just recommend watching Kamichu instead.
I guess we need to have at least one moe and military show a season now. Like everything else this season there is nothing that sets it apart from anything else in its class. So if you like the genre go and watch it but any one else can skip this because it’s just your average run of the mill moe military show.
verdict: There is no competition here for my panzer IV-chan for my military waifu
12. Nagi no Asukra
Two different worlds, one that lives under the sea and the other next to it. A girl who appears to fall in love with a surface dweller. Well PA Works at least makes gorgeous animation so I have stuck with it until now. I do like a few of the characters however I find a few others really annoying. I feel like I’ve seen this all before just in another slightly different way.
verdict: pick it up if you like PA Works and The Little Mermaid
11. Outbreak Company
Ok the premise is rather stupid even putting aside the magical world aspect. Exporting anime to a fantasy world is hard to buy but I’ll let that much go because I’m not sure if it’s even convinced itself to take that much seriously. Even building a school in said fantasy world just seems crazy. The princess is a walking cliche that could be mistaken for Louise from Zero no Tsukaima. It’s still slightly entertaining and episode one was fairly funny. It’s on the edge for me right now between good and bad.
verdict: depends on if the maid (but when doesn’t it depend on the maid)
I love the concept of this, a guy being force to make insane choices randomly presented to him in his head. This might be the most original concept of the season (which isn’t saying much). However it really dropped off after a good start. The jokes feel a little forced and the choices aren’t all that amusing anymore. It could still pick up but for now I’ll just say it’s right where it should be, in the middle.
verdict: your choice
I found season one fairly entertaining while not really much more than that however season two I am not all that into yet. It still entertains me more than most anime I’ve been watching. Being sunrise I am forcing to keep myself from getting attached to characters so that sets it way back for me. Thanks sunrise…
verdict: good for the sunrise mecha fan
8. Golden Time
Out of everything I’ve seen so far this is the hardest anime I have discussing. Partly because I’m not really sure where it’s going yet or why it’ll take 24 episodes to get there. Horie Yui is doing great in this which is a plus. On the comedy side it is mildly entertaining so if you are looking for a seninen set in modern college life this is the anime for you this season.
verdict: Horie Yui still has it
It’s a slice of life comedy set at a relaxing pace in the country side, that should pretty much tell you everything you need to know. As such it can get rather slow at times but that is the appeal. I was considering dropping it after the first episode but the second was much better so I’ll call this the comeback anime of the season for me. I think the humor may still get dull so I would only recommend for fans of the genre. The best thing I can say about it so far is senpai yuri love for the win. :3
verdict: about what you’d expect for a slow-paced slice of life comedy
KyoAni and supernatural action…this feels just weird to say in the same sentence. Well so far it’s been decent however like many of KyoAni’s anime of late it’s not lived up to the very high precedence KyoAni set early on. Worth the watch but nothing to get excited over unless you are new to KyoAni anime.
verdict: an average KyoAni is fine too
Galilei Donna is an adventure sci-fi about the search for some kind of lost treasure left behind by Galileo and the three sisters who are descendants of him and are stuck in the middle of it. Looks like it will have lots of futuristic technology and different lands which is always fun. One beef I have is the concept of everyone around the cast suddenly becoming evil and chasing after a mysterious treasure which feels like lazy writing. Would have been nicer to develop the why behind this a bit more as well as characters too before throwing everything into chaos. I’ll be sticking with it though since it looks interesting and my complaints are relatively small in the larger scale of the anime.
verdict: goldfish ships
4. Aikatsu! 2
I think Aikatsu being this far up is more a reflection on this season rather than a testament to the anime itself. If you haven’t seen the first season it’s just cute idols doing cute things. It’s completely in line with my interests in other words. I love how much they’ve improved the CG now (see picture). Spoiler: Otome being starlight queen is the greatest thing that has happen in 2013 yet they barely go into it sadly.
verdict: it’s now proven love you power is unbeatable
Magi is an anime that is so up and down for me. At times I regret sticking with it but at others it’s great. So far this season it has been on the great side. If you are a fan of Aladdin, magic and adventuring you can’t go wrong here.
verdict: pleasantly surprised
Yup I am putting an anime that has 4 minute episodes at number two. I don’t care it’s funny and my kind of humor. I’m told it’s related to the real life story of Horie Yui who was my favorite seiyuu before Megumi Nakajima. Even if that is not true I am all for bizarre animes about idols in the making.
verdict: makes me want to ride a vacuum cleaner to work.
1. Kill la Kill
If you know me you know Gurren Lagann is one of my favorites and Kill la Kill is basically Gurren Lagann in spirit but with some changes and themes. Even so I don’t consider it so far even close to on level with Gurren Lagann as I do not feel the spiral power in this anime. It also appears to be using ideas from Sumomomo momo and other shows while relying on fanservice a bit too much (which is ok in many cases but not here). So while I feel slightly disappointed about the possibilities of what could be I still think it’s a lot of fun to watch.
verdict: seifuku power still needs to power up more
